Groundbreaking, Fully Funded Facilities — #BreakTheSilence

Launching February 2026

At First Contact UK Mental Health, we believe mental health support should be accessible, meaningful, and rooted in real-life connection. That’s why we’re proud to introduce a range of groundbreaking, fully funded facilities, launching across the UK and beyond in February 2026 as part of our #BreakTheSilence initiative.

These spaces and experiences are designed to support emotional, physical, and social well-being in inclusive, uplifting ways. Whether it’s walking in nature, listening to music by the sea, connecting with others, or taking time for yourself, each facility offers a practical and compassionate route to better mental health.

From local group walks and open water sea dipping to supported respite care and mindful breaks abroad, these services are free, community-driven, and shaped by lived experience — because mental health support should never be a luxury.

Group Walks

Here’s a more detailed look at the positive impact group walking has on not just your mental health physical wellbeing and physical health in general.

Combats loneliness and isolation:
Walking groups provide a social setting where individuals can connect with others, fostering a sense of belonging and reducing feelings of isolation — especially helpful for those experiencing loneliness or bereavement.

Boosts mood and reduces stress:
The act of walking releases endorphins, natural mood boosters, and the social interaction within a group can further elevate mood and reduce stress levels.

Improves social interaction and confidence:
Group walks offer a relaxed and structured environment for social interaction, promoting confidence and communication skills — particularly for those who may be socially anxious.

Provides support and motivation:
Walking in a group can be a great source of support and encouragement, helping individuals stay motivated to continue exercising and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Contributes to physical health:
Walking, even at a moderate pace, has numerous physical health benefits, such as improved cardiovascular health, weight management, and a reduced risk of chronic diseases — all of which can positively impact mental health.

With over 50 locations across the North East, there’s a group near you ready to welcome you.

Here’s a more detailed look at the benefits:

Nature’s calming effect:
Being in natural environments, like forests or coastal paths, can lower cortisol levels (the stress hormone) and promote a sense of calm.

Rhythmic movement:
The repetitive motion of walking releases endorphins, which have mood-boosting and anxiety-reducing effects.

Mindful walking:
Focusing on the present moment while walking can help to quiet the mind and reduce rumination on negative thoughts.

Dopamine and serotonin release:
Walking, especially in nature, stimulates the release of dopamine and serotonin, neurotransmitters associated with happiness and well-being.

Sense of accomplishment:
Reaching a destination or achieving a walking goal can boost self-esteem and confidence.

Social interaction:
Walking with others can provide opportunities for social connection and reduce feelings of isolation.

Enhanced memory and attention:
Studies suggest that spending time in nature can improve cognitive function and mental clarity.

Mindful presence:
Walking mindfully can help to improve focus and attention, which can be beneficial for managing mental health conditions.

Appreciation for the natural world:
Walking holidays allow for immersion in nature, fostering a sense of awe and wonder.

Sense of place:
Exploring different landscapes can enhance cultural awareness and provide a sense of belonging.

Opportunities for reflection:
Being in nature can provide a space for reflection and introspection, which can be helpful for mental well-being.

Exercise and Mental Health:
Physical activity, even light exercise like walking, is known to improve mood, reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety, and enhance overall mental well-being.

Music and Mental Health:
Music has a powerful influence on the brain, capable of alleviating stress, anxiety, and depression, as well as improving mood and reducing fatigue.

Combining Exercise and Music:
When these two are combined, the benefits are often amplified. Music can make exercise feel more enjoyable, reduce perceived exertion, and improve focus in the here and now.

Beach Walking:
We have some evidence to suggest that people—particularly those with anxiety and depression—experience less maladaptive rumination and intrusive thoughts while walking on the beach, instead thinking more about external surroundings, such as the natural environment, rather than their own issues.

Open Water Sea Dipping

Stress Relief:
Cold water exposure can help reduce stress by triggering the release of endorphins, which are natural mood boosters.

Fat Metabolisation:
Cold water exposure converts white fat to brown fat.

Reduced Inflammation

Improved Circulation

Increased Alertness

Improved Immune System

The benefits are absolutely incredible for individuals with various mental health issues. We highly recommend this free facility as part of your weekly routine to help keep you grounded and promote the release of happy, healthy endorphins.
